UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski gave it all to lightweight champion Islam Makhachev when he became the doubles champion at UFC 284 in Perth, Australia on Saturday.
That wasn’t enough and Makhachev made a unanimous decision with his two judges 48-47 him and the rest he 49-46. Champion By losing his championship chances, Volkanovski also lost his legendary status as the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter.
Before the match he was the -375 favorite at BetMGM, Makhachev is now 24-1 and on a 12-game winning streak. Volkanovski’s 22-game winning streak is coming to an end, with his record now at 25-2.
In the co-main event, Yair Rodriguez took advantage of Josh Emmett’s skillful submission to win the interim featherweight title, becoming only the second Mexican-born fighter to become UFC champion that year. Brandon Moreno won the flyweight title at UFC 283 in January.
